My Tuppenceworth...
Agreed - there are big band only in it for the money. Agreed - one or two of the above bands pull out anyway. Agreed - there are so-called punks who attend purely to pose, get drunk or on a nostalgia trip.
But, the reasons I'll still be going are...
Great Atmosphere - Lots of like-minded people in one place. Great People - The festival offers the unique opportunity to meet/hang out with like-minded people from around the world. Great Music - Ignore the big boys and check out the wealth of lesser spotted punk bands from all over the world who couldn't afford to tour normally besides supporting your own local favourites as they introduce themselves to a wider audience. North West Punk Scene - What a good opportunity to show the world (and the Southerners) that British punk rock isn't just about London as well as bringing money into the region.
Regarding the financial aspect, be realistic - how much do you think it costs to organise something on this scale? Even if you only paid the bands expenses, you still have security staff, venue fees, advertising etc. to take into account. If it was that easy to make money promoting a punk festival everyone would do it besides if they wanted to make more profit all they'd need to do is get big corporate sponsors like all the other large festivals but instead the only join forces with punk labels etc. to keep it independent.
The name changes are getting annoying but I suspect this is to try to gain new interest (or for tax reasons?!?!) as well as the regulars since the attendance has dwindled recently. Regarding the venue change, I heard from a couple of different sources (including Morecambe business owners) that one of the reasons it moved from Morecambe because Lancaster Council wanted to impose too many restrictions (possibly in a deliberate move to deter the festival organisers) which would change the nature of the festival. In addition, the cost of the weekend ticket has barely rose in the last few years (unlike other festivals I could mention) and offer great value with the increasing number of bands playing, particularly if bought early.
A lot of people criticise Darren for the things the festival gets wrong but no one is keen to give credit for the good things the festival stands for. If anyone else thinks they can do better, I'm sure Darren would be the first to offer encouragement.
Swallow your pride and enjoy the only truly independent punk festival of this scale before the Government imposes so many licensing restrictions that your only option of a major live music event is attending an over-sponsored festival or Family-friendly Stadium.
...and yes of course support your local punk scene and gigs too as without them there is no punk rock!

gotta agree with most of you on this one , the damage is being done by the majority of older punks , who wont get off their fuckin backsides to see the newer bands , even if its on their own door step . Even some bands wont go and support anything if its a certain promoter doing the gig or if they are not playing .. Waste of space and we can do without em ,they are not what the younger generation wants to learn from

biggest question is people. is our scene big enough for this division amongst promoters and punks ? I agree some of the bigger bands make shit laods of cash, but Tim, you know the score, do you always front money for the bands you put on. Do you always pay when you are on a loser ? I have lost loads by making the wrong moves and write it off, I just get by.
Daz R is a good guy, a sound person to know, and im sure if you sat down with him you would say the same. truce it mate, this is silly.
cant believ anyome would find rebellion or whatever offensive, theres a lot of good people out there, and a lot go to this festival. peace pipe time ?

Sorry Clint but I just don't agree. The day Daz Russell puts on a gig which has only lesser known bands on it i'll change my opinion. Yes lesser known bands play Rebellion but they all get shit time slots and most of the punters are in the pub and don't watch them. These bands are lucky if they get paid anything at all. Most have to be content with a free festival pass and a few beers. Rebellion is a business and it is there to make money. Bands have to pay hundreds of pounds just to have a merch stall there and that is just one example of how making money is the overiding factor. It annoys me when Daz Russell says "I've done a lot for punk", basically it is punk that has done a lot for him.

;D I'M WITH TIM AGAIN ON THIS, I KNOW PROMOTERS WHO BLATENTLY USE WELL KNOWN LOCAL BANDS TO PLUMP UP THE AUDIENCE, AND THEN PAYING THEM WITH A BOTTLE OF CIDER, BUT I SUPPOSE IF THEY'RE DUMB ENOUGH TO PLAY THEN THEY DESERVE IT??? PUNK ROCK EHH

I love the festivals ! As a 40+ dinosaur "married with children" it gives me opportunity to catch lesser known/newer bands, whilst allowing me access to the groups that defined my youth.
If you were in the Main Hall first thing on Thursday you would have caught an amazing set by Pink Hearse. they started playing to a couple of hundred and ended up with 5-600 captivated.
I caught the Dead Pets at the festival - to my mind the best live act ever. Without the festival I may have missed out seeing them several times subsequently.
Whatever the promoter's motives - be it profit or punk - I will attend as long as the value is there. £60 -80 for four days of top punk action - I'm in
PS for value and discovering some newer bands send Trev Oi/Haworth £20 or so and he will send you a bucketful of promos/cdrs

i`ve played the last 3 Rebellion/Wasted Festivals + the 2 Xmas shows in 2005. It gives bands like mine the chance to play again to a live audience. We formed in 1977 & played our first gig with the UK Subs in 1978, we split in 82 & reformed to play 1 gig @ Brixton Academy with Sham 69 in 93 & that was it until we were asked to reform in Dec 04 to play with The Rezillos in London. Apart from Touring the UK with The Damned in 1980 we only played 3 gigs outside of London and festivals like Rebellion give us the opportunity to play to a lot of people who never got the chance to see bands like mine in the "Good Old Days" & to bump into old friends & "fans" that we haven`t seen for 25+ years. With regards to "Large Fees" most bands (even some of the bigger names, UK Subs,Vice Squad, Test Tubes etc don`t even cover their costs for travelling & hotels etc. Darren pays us a "fair" amount & a case of beer, but it still doesn`t cover our costs & i`m still always out of pocket as i`m self employed & end up losing a few days money + you need a few quid for spending money for the weekend. I personally think it`s a great weekend & great value for the money & i know that it costs a fortune to put on one of these gigs & i think Daz is doing a great job. definitely a case of "diluted rebellion" ... our scene had so much to offer & its been reduced to a laughable spectacle of old men playing the same old tunes from 25years ago .... why not just move it to Worthing so its closer to all the retirement homes??
Its a very very sad reflection of what some of us worked so hard to try & achieve.
YES THATS RIGHT PUNK IS DEAD, IT'S JUST ANOTHER CHEAP PRODUCT FOR THE CONSUMERS HEAD!!!!

I don't want to be a bitch, but It's bands like the straps who try milking summat they never had in the first place, that takes up valuable space for newer and more worthwhile bands. It's not just the straps there are other guilty parties. there's a sort of pecking order, and some bands are a lot fucking higher up than they should be, know what I mean?
